Before acting: CGHS procedures differ by beneficiary category, treatment and current orders. Verify the latest requirement for the individual case.

Where medicines are issued

MoHFW's 2025–26 Annual Report states that medicines are supplied through CGHS dispensaries/Wellness Centres according to prescriptions of CGHS or other Government doctors and the CGHS formulary.

Medicines not available in stock

The current Annual Report states that medicines not available at the dispensary are procured through Authorised Local Chemists and supplied to beneficiaries.

DVDMS supply system

MoHFW says CGHS uses the Drug & Vaccine Distribution Management System (DVDMS) for medicine distribution and demand management. Common medicines are intended for immediate issue from Wellness Centre stock, while unavailable items are indented through Authorised Local Chemists.

Specialist prescriptions

Under the referral simplification guidance, medicines prescribed by empanelled-hospital specialists are supplied by CGHS according to applicable rules, generally through the Wellness Centre.

What to check on collection

Match the beneficiary name, medicine/generic name, strength, quantity and directions with the current prescription. Ask the Wellness Centre if an unavailable item has been indented and how collection will be communicated.

Do not substitute on your own

If the exact prescribed brand is unavailable, do not independently alter dosage or medicine. CGHS may supply an approved generic/available equivalent under its rules; medical questions should be confirmed with the treating doctor.

Long-term medicines

For chronic treatment, keep recent prescriptions and follow the validity/review requirements advised by CGHS. Do not rely indefinitely on an old prescription if a medical review is due.

If a medicine remains unavailable

Keep the prescription/indent details and approach the Wellness Centre staff/CMO in charge for status. Escalate with the beneficiary details, medicine, prescription date and indent/reference information rather than a general complaint.
