1. First identify the pension category
Do not treat every defence pension as the same benefit. Official DESW material lists service pension, family pension, special family pension, liberalised family pension, disability pension and reservist pension among the principal categories. Your entitlement, rate and documents depend on the category actually sanctioned.
2. Check qualifying service
DESW’s current pension overview states that the normal minimum qualifying service for service pension is 20 years for Commissioned Officers and 15 years for Personnel Below Officer Rank (PBOR), subject to the applicable regulations and exceptions. Do not use this headline rule to decide special, invaliding, reservist or other exceptional cases.
3. Understand the PPO
Your Pension Payment Order (PPO), including any corrigendum or revision PPO, is the core sanction record. Check the name, service/rank details, pension category, qualifying service where shown, family-pension details, bank/payment information and sanctioned elements. If the sanctioned record is wrong, a bank-side change alone may not cure the underlying pension record.
4. Know the role of SPARSH
For pensioners migrated to or processed through SPARSH, the portal is the service-delivery system for pension information and many pensioner requests. BenefitDesk keeps the portal procedures in the separate SPARSH Hub so this Defence Pension Hub can focus on entitlement and pension rules.
5. Keep a basic pension file ready
Keep the latest PPO/e-PPO and corrigenda, discharge/service documents, Aadhaar/PAN where applicable, bank details, registered mobile/email, spouse/family details, and copies of representations or official replies. For a family or disability case, keep the category-specific certificates and service/medical records relevant to the claim.
6. Check revisions separately
A pension can change because of Government revision orders, Dearness Relief, OROP, correction of service particulars or a revised/corrigendum PPO. Do not assume every increase is automatic in every case; compare the applicable order with the pension record and payment statement.
7. If the amount looks wrong
First compare the sanctioned PPO/revision with the amount actually credited. If the sanction itself appears wrong, the case may require the concerned Service/Record Office, pension sanctioning authority or SPARSH route. If the sanction is correct but payment differs, identify the disbursement/payment issue before escalating.
8. No universal disposal time
There is no single published disposal time that safely applies to every defence-pension correction, revision, family-pension or disability case. Use the timeline, if any, stated for the specific service/request and keep acknowledgement/reference numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Is defence pension the same as SPARSH?
No. Defence pension is the benefit/entitlement. SPARSH is a pension administration and service-delivery system used for many defence pensioners.
What is the minimum service for normal service pension?
DESW’s current overview states 20 years for Commissioned Officers and 15 years for PBOR, subject to the applicable regulations and exceptions.
Which document should I check first?
Start with the latest PPO/e-PPO and any corrigendum or revision PPO, then compare it with your service records and actual pension payment.
Can a calculator decide my entitlement?
No. A calculator can estimate an amount, but entitlement and sanction are governed by the applicable rules and official pension orders.
