ECHS Smart Card Forgot Password: Reset Procedure 2026

Use the official 64KB Smart Card application portal to reset a forgotten password by registered-email OTP or security questions. If both methods fail, follow the ECHS assisted-reset procedure.

Independent guideReviewed 21 September 2026
Latest instruction used: This guide follows the Central Organisation ECHS policy dated 10 June 2026, which supersedes earlier ECHS letters on forgotten passwords.
Security warning: Never share your OTP, password or security answers with an unofficial person. Use only the official portal and ECHS email/Regional Centre channels.

Before you start

This procedure is for the login used with the Online 64KB ECHS Smart Card Application. Keep the primary beneficiary's registered mobile number, registered email access and security-question answers ready. If an assisted reset becomes necessary, also keep the service number and PPO available.

Open the official ECHS Smart Card application portal and select Already Registered. Click to Login.

Method 1: Reset through registered-email OTP

  1. Enter the ESM/primary beneficiary's registered mobile number.
  2. Select Forgot Password.
  3. Enter the primary beneficiary's registered email ID to request an OTP.
  4. Check the email Inbox and also the Spam/Junk folders.
  5. Enter the OTP on the official portal and set a new password.
Important: Use the email address registered in the ECHS application. An OTP sent to that address should not be forwarded or shared.

Method 2: Reset through security questions

  1. On the same login page, enter the registered mobile number and choose Forgot Password.
  2. Select the Using Security Question tab.
  3. Answer the security question using the information recorded during registration.
  4. Follow the portal prompts to create a new password.

Enter the answer carefully, including the spelling used during registration. Do not repeatedly guess or disclose the answer to an unofficial helper.

Method 3: When both self-service methods fail

If the OTP is not received and you do not know the security-question answer, send an email from the registered email ID with:

  • Subject: FORGET PASSWORD
  • Service number
  • Registered mobile number

Send the request to the official ECHS address stated in the 10 June 2026 instruction—jditechs2 [at] echs.gov.in—or to the respective ECHS Regional Centre. Write the address normally in your email application by replacing [at] with @.

ECHS states that the submitted details will be verified and the password will be issued by return email. The instruction does not promise a fixed processing time.

If no email address is registered

If the ESM/primary beneficiary does not have a registered email ID, the 10 June 2026 instruction requires a copy of the PPO to be forwarded for verification along with the assisted-reset request. Send it only to the official ECHS address or the respective Regional Centre.

Protect personal data: Do not post the PPO, service number or mobile number publicly. Do not send these documents to agents, social-media accounts or unofficial websites.

After resetting the password

  1. Sign in again through the official portal using the registered mobile number and new password.
  2. Save the new password securely; do not keep it in a public note or message.
  3. Confirm that the registered email ID is current. ECHS advises beneficiaries to keep their email details updated in the application.
  4. If account details need correction, use the current official ECHS data-change procedure rather than opening a duplicate application.

Common problems and safe solutions

OTP did not arrive

Check Spam/Junk, confirm the registered email was entered correctly and wait briefly before trying again. If it still does not arrive, use the security-question method or the official assisted-reset route.

Registered email is old or inaccessible

Do not submit repeated guesses or create a duplicate application. Contact the respective Regional Centre or the official ECHS channel and be prepared to provide the verification documents requested by ECHS.

Security answer is not accepted

Use the exact spelling recorded during registration. If you cannot confirm it, stop guessing and use the assisted-reset procedure.

Someone asks for the OTP or payment

Do not share the OTP or password and do not pay an unofficial person. Password reset should be handled through the official portal or official ECHS channels.
