Step 1: When you need to check empanelment
Check before any planned specialist consultation, investigation, procedure or admission outside the polyclinic/service-hospital route. Empanelment can change, and a hospital may be approved only for particular services.
Step 2: Open the current official hospital route
Go to the official ECHS website and use “Empanelled Hospital Details.” This is safer than depending on an old downloaded list because ECHS hospital status and authorised services can change.
Step 3: Check the exact speciality/service
Confirm that the hospital is currently empanelled for the speciality, investigation or treatment you need. A hospital being “ECHS empanelled” does not by itself authorise every department or procedure.
Step 4: For planned treatment, obtain the proper referral
Take the referral/authorisation issued through the ECHS route. Carry the ECHS card/accepted entitlement document and relevant medical papers. Check the referral details before going to the hospital.
Step 5: At the empanelled hospital
Report to the ECHS/help desk and present the referral and beneficiary identification. Under ECHS empanelment terms, properly referred authorised cases are provided cashless services within the agreed scope.
Step 6: If it is a grave emergency
An empanelled hospital should admit and provide life- and limb-saving treatment on production of the ECHS card even without a normal referral slip. ECHS empanelment terms state that emergency treatment is cashless until stabilisation and that the hospital should inform the nearest polyclinic/BPA within 48 hours.
Step 7: If the hospital demands cash or refuses service
Do not argue at the bedside. Ask the hospital ECHS desk for the reason and immediately inform the nearest/parent polyclinic OIC and Director Regional Centre. Preserve the referral, bills/demand, messages and names/details of the desk handling the case.
Step 8: How to make a complaint
ECHS issued a 17 October 2025 advisory on the channel of inquiry against empanelled hospitals. Complaints with available evidence/documentary support are routed to the Regional Centre under which the hospital is empanelled; the Director Regional Centre examines the complaint and may seek the hospital’s comments.
Step 9: Processing time
There is no single official time limit for resolving every hospital-status, cashless-service or complaint issue. For an active treatment problem, contact the polyclinic/Regional Centre immediately rather than waiting for a generic grievance timeline.
Step 10: Common mistakes to avoid
Do not use an old hospital list without re-checking; do not assume every speciality is covered; do not confuse “hospital has applied for empanelment” with “hospital is currently empanelled”; and keep documentary evidence if service is refused or cash is demanded.
Step 11: Whom to contact
For treatment problems, start with the hospital ECHS desk and nearest/parent polyclinic OIC, then Director Regional Centre. The official ECHS website lists 1800-114-115 for clarification.
